Próspero Año y Felicidad:)

December 30,2019

¡Hola y'all!

Wow, I feel like soo much has happened this week! So let's see to start off, last Monday I got to talk to some of my best amigas bc they happened to be at my house j chillin with my family when I called, so that was so so good. We also had a little zone Christmas party at the mission office so we got to see President and Sister Golden, love those guys:)

On Christmas Eve(!) we started teaching a new amiga named Bertha! She's super cool and so funny and is really trying to make a better life for herself and we love that. We also got to do some service!! We went to this homeless shelter in Tustin, and we got to serve some good dinner with some bomb dessert, and all of the people there were so sweet and so grateful and it really just made me so so grateful for all the ways that I've been blessed in my life:)

On Christmas(!!) oh my goodness we had so much fun! I literally love Christmas sooo much. But we had a little meeting with our whole zone, and each district leader went up and did a little lesson about Christ, and then a few people were able to share their testimonies about Him. I shared a little bit of mine on Facebook, so hopefully, y'all were able to see it! But after that, Hermana Franklin came home and opened all of our cute little presents from our amazing friends and families. And then we got to talk to our families and wow I just love mine so much. That night we went to our Bishop's house and had a good ole Christmas FEAST with some champurrado también. It was so good and they are so sweet.

On Thursday our boy Eduardo passed his little interview to be baptized and he was SO hyped for it:) and then on Friday, we found 4 new people to teach!! They are so cool. But we met the lady, Alma, on Thursday and she told us to come back Friday to play a game and teach a bunch of the little girls that lived around there, so we came back with one of my favorite games, Jump to Jesus, and taught 6 little girls about Jesus and the love that He has for them. I love love love teaching little kids y'all, and these girls are so smart and sweet. Literally so much fun.

On Saturday we got our transfer email, and Hermana Franklin and I are holding it down here in Santa Ana for another transfer and I'm super pumped:) On Sunday after church we went by our amigos Norfanelia and Felipe and brought them a few things for Christmas from the super sweet Masoner family that came down to Anaheim for a little bit. Norfanelia and Felipe and their hijos were all so happy and grateful for all of it. Just seeing their little son Poncho light up when he was opening one little bag was so cool. I love Christmas:)

But yeah and the highlight of the week was Eduardo's baptism!! It was super crazy and un poquito stressful at first though because the water was freezing cold so one of the Hermanos kept turning it off to wait and see if he could fix it, but like it takes a long time to fill up a whole font so we were like No Hermano, it's okay if the water is cold, but he didn't believe us. Also like every missionary ever is sick, so we were scrambling trying to find someone to teach the Restoration at it. BUT of course, everything worked out:) someone figured out how to turn the water heater on, Hermana Franklin and I taught the Restoration, and Eduardo was/is the cutest baptized boy on the planet. I love being a missionary and I love all of y'all so much!! I hope everyone has a super awesome New Year and that we're all setting goals to better ourselves and the lives of those around us!!

Con Amor,
Hermana Brayton:)

¡¡Feliz (almost) Navidad!!

December 23, 2019

¡Holaaa Y'all!!!

So so sorry I ran out of time last week to email and stuff, but I hope everyone is doing super well, and that everyone is SUPER excited for Christmas!! Thanks to my amazing aunt Dara and her amazing friend Barbie, Hermana Franklin and I have a cute little Christmas tree that I keep plugged in pretty much 24/7. I literally love Navidad. And we've been doing a ton of stuff to celebrate too!! Last Friday, we had a Ward Christmas Party that was soo cute. They did a little play and it was super good, but Hermana Franklin and the Elders and I were dying haha I love our ward. We don't really have any fancy sound equipment, so they just had normal microphones like taped to their chests or tied around their neck. Good times. On Friday we did a hot chocolate stand that was super fun:) but also we learned that boiling giant pots of hot water are not quick haha oops. On Sunday we had a little Christmas Choir at church, and it was so cute. Not to be biassed or anything, but I just think that hymns in Spanish are so pretty. Like "Silent Night" is so pretty, but "Noche de Luz" just hits different. Last night we went out with the Elders again and did some good solid Christmas Caroling:) we went and visited some of our amigos we're teaching and made them cookies and sang to them, and seriously it was the highlight of my week seeing them just light up.

Oh also this past week, the Elders in another ward asked Hermana Franklin and me to teach the Restoration at a baptism, and that was scary but also cool. The Restoration is the first lesson we teach just about everyone, but standing in front of a room full of people that all know Spanish fluently without any type of notes or anything is way different than just sitting on someone's couch and talking to them about it. So yeah we were pretty nervous, but it went well:) and the girl who got baptized was glowing she was so happy, so it was super awesome.

Also, quick update, our CUTE little friend Eduardo is getting baptized next Sunday!! He is so excited and so am I:) this kid is so smart and has so many good questions. He's also kind of a little bit all over the place with his questions, but it honestly makes me love him even more. Whenever we were talking about who he wants to invite to his baptism, he was really thinking hard about it, and then started telling us about his friend that he thinks would really like it. The way that he was explaining it was so sweet and simple, and it was such a testament to me that sharing our beliefs with people doesn't have to be anything big. Honestly, the gospel is known for being simple, and it's for everyone! And really truly, around this time of the year, everyone's hearts are softened and everyone is thinking about Jesus, so share what you know!

I'm so grateful to be able to talk about Jesus every day and to remember Him. I hope y'all can really feel the love He has for you, and that you can act in faith to help others feel it as well:) I love y'all so much and I hope everyone has a super special Christmas!

Con Amor y Feliz Navidad,

Hermana Brayton's Sacrament Meeting talk to her home ward

December 22, 2019

Jesucristo

Buenos Días Hermanos y Hermanas! I’m sure y’all can imagine my surprise when my dad emailed me asking to me write a talk for this Sunday, but honestly, I’m kind of liking the idea of writing the talk and not having to give it. First, I just want to say how much I genuinely appreciate all of the support from everyone here. I loved all of the cards from the Christmas party, and I love all of the emails and updates from everyone! Your encouragement always lifts me up a little higher, and your testimonies are constantly strengthening mine.

But the real topic for today, the reason that all of you are here, and the reason that I’m 2500 miles away attempting to speak Spanish, is Jesus Christ. I have been so blessed by my amazing family to be able to know Jesus and to know His story and everything that he has done for me, but just from these 6 months of being on my mission, my understanding and appreciation for Him has grown more than I can explain. The first thing that is so crucial to understand though before you can really grasp the gravity of Jesus Christ, and the first thing we teach any person that we meet here, is that God is our loving Heavenly Father. More than anything, He wants us to be happy. He wants us to have a real, eternal joy that won’t waver in hard or dark times. And at the center of His big, master plan of happiness is Jesus Christ.

There are two scriptures in John 16 that I feel explain this super well. Jesus is talking to his disciples, explaining that he is going to go back to live with God, and of course they’re pretty sad that he’s leaving them. He says in verse 22, “And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you,” and in verse 33, “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” So, it is in HIM that we have this kind of joy that Heavenly Father desires for us, the kind of joy that no man can take away!

But I know that sometimes this really seems too good to be true. We all have our doubts that we’ve just messed up too many times, or that maybe this applies to everyone except for ourselves, but Hermanos y Hermanas I can promise you with my whole entire heart that Jesus Christ spoke these words for you. These beautiful promises from him, and so many others as well were spoken and written with you in mind,  and what an absolutely incredible blessing it is that we have them readily available to us all the time. And I truly believe this goes for talks given by modern-day prophets and apostles as well. There is a quote that I’m sure a lot of you have heard from Elder Jeffery R Holland that says, “However late you think you are, however many chances you think you have missed, however many mistakes you feel you have made or talents you think you don’t have, or however far away from home and family and God you feel you have traveled, I testify that you have not traveled beyond the reach of divine love. It is not possible for you to sink lower than the infinite light of Christ’s atonement shines.” In John 15:13 Jesus also says this, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” He really is our friend Hermanos, He really will never forget us, and he will really be here with arms open wide to comfort us in any time of our lives.

The love of Christ is probably my favorite thing to talk to people about over here. It’s unconditional, never-ending, and honestly mind-blowing. During his life on Earth, love was a solid part in the foundation of his gospel. Every act of service, teaching moment, and miracle was done through pure love. There are so many examples of this in the New Testament, and quite a few in the Book of Mormon as well. One of my favorites is in 3 Nephi 17 when Jesus is in the Americas teaching the people there. He had just instructed them to go back to their houses and ponder the things he had just taught them, but then he saw how they were looking “steadfastly upon him as if they would ask him to tarry a little longer with them,” and so he stayed and healed them and blessed them and prayed for them. Once he finished praying, he said, “Blessed are ye because of your faith. And now behold, my joy is full.” And in verse 21 it says, “And when he had said these words, he wept.” Imagine that, the savior and redeemer, the only perfect person to ever live, weeping for joy because of the faith and righteousness of his brothers and sisters. I know that he still loves us the same way, and I’m sure that he still weeps for joy as we strive to follow his example and do what we know is right.

We all know that he truly is the perfect example for all of us, he was charitable, generous, and strong. He was a teacher, a friend, and a guide. One of my favorite attributes of Jesus though is being a light. The idea of light is often characterized with warmth, happiness, direction, and comfort. In John 1:9 it says that Jesus “was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world,” and in John 12:46 Jesus himself says, “I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.” Everywhere that he went, he went about doing good, bringing light into the darkest lives and places, and bringing hope to those who needed it. It’s like the Light the World initiative by the church as well. We are striving to light the world just as Jesus did, through acts of service for all of those around us. Just like in 3 Nephi 12:16 when Christ says “let your light so shine before this people, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” He wants us to light others, just as he lit the world. Darkness can’t be in the same space where there is light, literally and metaphorically. So as we constantly remember his light and strive to have it with us as well, we don’t have to worry about any darkness.

Brothers and SIsters, I know that Jesus Christ was sent to the Earth by our Heavenly Father who loves us. I know that they both know us individually and that they want us to have real joy throughout the eternities. I know that Jesus Christ lived and died for us and that he truly does live again. He is the light and the life of the world, and he does love us with an unchanging love. I am so grateful for the opportunity that I have to testify to the people here in Southern California about him. I have already seen how much good can enter a person’s life when they realize the love Jesus has for them, and I have most definitely seen it in my own life as well. I know that as we read the scriptures and learn more about his life, we will draw so much closer to him. I know without a doubt that when we build our testimonies on Jesus Christ, and also on the Book of Mormon, and when we keep working to build them, that we will never feel lost. Jesus is the Christ, the son of God, my Savior. This knowledge that I have of him and the true joy that it brings me is something that no one can take away, and I pray that y’all can each feel that as well. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

Spiderman in God's Plan

December 09, 2019

¡Hola y'all!

This week in Santa Ana was SO GOOD!! We actually had a bunch of lessons this week bc we found 3 whole new people to teach and they're all so cool. I love them. One of them is the precious 9 year old named Edurado that wants to get baptized super bad. He's so dang smart and definitely keeps us on our toes with all of his random deep questions. And actually, it was so funny during one of our lessons this week with him bc we were talking about the Plan of Salvation (God's plan for us) and the role that Adam and Eve had in it, and he just looks at me and is like "hold on, you're reminding me of a superhero'" and then he runs over to his Lego set and grabs a little Spiderman. He said that in the Avengers Infinity War movie, Spiderman decides to go with the other superheroes even though they told him not to, but that it actually ends up being good bc he helped them. So basically, Adam and Eve are like Spiderman! I literally love this kid oh my gosh hahah he's the best!

December 3rd was our friend Manuel's cumpleaños so we celebrated by going and getting some tacos at his favorite taco place:) Then he showed us his record and CD collection. Holy cow y'all, this man literally has thousands of them. And they're all bops too like he has all the classic stuff so we were able to bond over some Styx and Beach Boys and things like that bc my grandpa loves all that stuff too.

Also this week we were able to do some service with Red Cross at a blood drive place and it was so fun:) We just were talking to all the people whenever they were done, and there was this one dude telling me about his daughter that was the main person in charge of the international humanitarian effort of Red Cross. He was saying that she's traveled all around the world just helping people and that sounds like my DREAM. It's seriously so cool talking to people about their lives and their stories, I love it.

And okay, we had Zone Conference this week too and it was sooo good as always. We talked about how important faith is, and also how people can be so genuinely touched through service:)

Also, I just want to share a few scriptures that I was reading this week that I really loved.
- Acts 17:27-28 says "...though He be not far from every one of us: For in him we live, and move, and have our being"
- 1 Nephi 20:18 says that if we follow the Lord's commandments we will have "peace [like] a river"
- 1 Nephi 21:15-16 says "Yet will I not forget thee. . . Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands"

More than I know anything else, I know that our Heavenly Father and our Savior Jesus Christ love us each more than we can understand. Like it says in Acts, God is right here for us, forever and always. And I have truly felt the peace that Nephi talks about that comes from keeping His commandments and recognizing the love that he so freely gives us. And that last scripture really just hits home every time I read it. Jesus literally has scars on the palms of His hands for me, and for you, and for every single person. He will never forget us, He will never leave us, He is our constant peace and comfort. And while this is the perfect time of year to remember these things, it's super important to remember them all the time!!

But yeah I LOVE being a missionary and I LOVE Jesus and I LOVE California and I LOVE all of y'all too!! Thanks for reading this whole email haha sorry it's kind of long, but I hope everyone has an amazing week!!

Winter in California!

December 2, 2019

¡¡Hola Y'all!!

Week 2 down in Santa Ana and 6 MONTHS down in the mish!! So crazy! I can't believe I'm already 1/3 of the way done, and that next year at this time I'll be packing up and heading home:( but don't worry, no ones trunky over here. If anything it makes me want to work 10x harder to really make the most of my time here. Santa Ana is such a dang party too, I love it here. This week we made friends with some gang members, just about froze at a service activity, and had ham for Thanksgiving (3 things I never expected to happen here) and it was the best time! We also got to know and teach a lot of really cool people here:)

On Thursday for Thanksgiving, we went up to the Honda Center in Anaheim and helped out with this super cool group to feed people in need. It was super fun bc there were a bunch of other missionaries there, and also service is just always a good time, but BOY it was sooo cold. It was pouring rain and couldn't have been over 55 degrees, and your girl didn't bring anything heavier than a rain jacket bc California is supposed to be warm and sunny all the time, right? Pues, that's what I thought. It's really all good though, it was such a fun time. And afterwards we had Thanksgiving dinner with our Obispo and his family, the Elders, and another family from the ward. It was sooo good and they're seriously the sweetest family. And on Saturday we actually had another "Thanksgiving dinner" with another family, and both times they only had ham and no turkey, so that's something new.

Also on Saturday, we started teaching this super cool guy named Marcos and he just had so many questions. I was worried he was going to try and bash us at first, but then he was actually super interested to learn more so that was cool. We also met this lady named Veronica that is SO sweet. Her life is so wild though, bc she had cancer a few years ago and then got a blessing from some people at church, and then her cancer just like went away! Wild! She has so much faith, and I want to teach her so badly, but she just has a lot of other hard things going on in her life right now that make it difficult, so if y'all could keep her and her family in your prayers I know she would really really appreciate it:)

Also this week I got to go on exchanges with my girl Hermana Hinton, and I love her. She's the best STL ever and seriously the best trainer I could've asked for!! Ily Hermana!!

I hope everyone's Thanksgiving was super awesome though! I just want to challenge all of y'all to find someone to serve this week. It could be something super simple, but try to think outside of the box! I really truly believe that if we all just focused on serving and loving everyone around us, we'd all just be happier:) I love y'all muchísimo and I hope everyone has a great week!!

Santa Ana

November 25, 2019

¡Hola y'all!!!

Okay so first week in Santa Ana was such a party. I love this place, but wow is it different from La Habra, haha but it is so good! Hermana Franklin and I live in the middle of downtown Santa Ana so we can just walk out of our apartment and go talk to people it's so nice. Also we've been driving a Malibu and I'm just going to say it, I'm a big fan;)

But let's see this week we've mostly just been trying to visit everyone that we're teaching because neither of us know any of them yikes. We switched areas with some Elders, so both of us are new to the area, but we're figuring it out and I love it here so much. There is such a sweet guy named Manuel that was just baptized like two weeks ago, and both times we went over to his house he had a plate full of fresh fruit for us which was so cute. And we also were able to teach someone an "on-the-spot" lesson on a sidewalk, and we taught a cute 10-year-old girl about some commandments, but other than that we haven't had the chance to sit down with a lot of people yet. I wish there were more exciting things to update y'all on, but really truly this week hasn't had a ton going on. A few members in my new ward have already fed us some way good tacos and taquitos though, and that's always exciting:)

But this week I was reading in 1 Nephi chapter 13, and I really like a lot of things in it. Specifically, I love how it talks about "plain and precious things." It says how the teachings of Christ are simple to follow and to understand, and that they are so vital to having eternal happiness! There's a verse that says "Whoso shall publish peace, yea, tidings of great joy, how beautiful upon the mountains shall they be." And I love that:) Christ's teachings aren't complicated and he doesn't want us to be confused. He wants us to "publish peace," be joyful, help others to be joyful, and this is the perfect time of year to think about it (and do it;))!

I hope everyone has such an amazing Thanksgiving! I'm so thankful for each one of you, and I love y'all so much!!

Family History, Chameleons, and Heaven's Playbook

Nov 18, 2019

¡Hola Y'aaall!

HI GUESS WHAT I'M MOVING!! I'm moving from sweet La Habra down to Santa Ana!! I'm soo so excited too!! It's going to be such a party :) I have loved it up here so much and I can't even tell you all the things I've learned, but I'm always ready to go somewhere new and see some new things.

This week we were able to go with Tony down to the Family History Center in Orange, and it was SO cool. He had asked his mom and grandma for some names and birthdays of his great and great great grandparents before hand, so we were able to get right down to business and start searching up his people. It was so amazing to just see his family tree grow, and he really really enjoyed it. There's something so personal and sacred about learning more about your ancestors I think. While we were there I was able to read a story about my great-great-great-grandma (I think) who was born in South Africa, and then came to the US and traveled a long and hard road out to Utah with her family, and wow I seriously loved it. 12/10 recommend Family Search!

We were also able to meet the cutest family ever this week at a little Noche de Hogar our branch put on on Tuesday. We were supposed to go over to their house and visit them on Wednesday, but things got crazy and they weren't able to. But on Thursday we went and brought them some brownies and right whenever we walked in the complex, the two little girls were outside playing and they ran up and gave us the biggest hugs! We walked with them over to their house where their mom was cleaning and listening to some Kendrick Lamar, and they start telling us about their pet chameleon they just got and their two pet snakes. I LOVE them. They let us play with their chameleon for a little bit while we talked and I just could not stop smiling because seriously you could feel the love they had in their home. I love being able to meet such amazing people here, wow.

Also on Thursday, I went on exchanges just for the morning down in Long Beach and I got to see the OCEAN and can I just say I missed that guy. The ocean and the beach always reminds me of home, and it was so warm, and you could just smell the salty air. Honestly that is exactly my happy place.

Yesterday at church, this sweet Hermana gave a talk about Heaven's playbook and how we really have it today. We really have the resources that we need to progress and learn and grow in this life and to prepare to return to live with our Heavenly Father. The Bible and the Book of Mormon are sooo so incredible and important, and honestly how blessed are we that we have them available right at our fingertips? SO blessed!! She ended with saying "No es fácil, pero es posible. Y oración nunca falla." I know it's not easy, but more than that I know it's possible with our playbooks we have, and especially through prayer!!

I am so grateful everyday to be here and to have the opportunity to talk and think about the blessings we have so often. And I know it's all thanks to our loving Heavenly Father and our Savior Jesus Christ. I wish I would've taken advantage of the scriptures more before to learn more about them and our playbook, but it's never too late! I love y'all sooo so much! Have an amazing week!

Con Amor,
Hermana Brayton:)

Grateful

November 11, 2019

¡Hola Hola Y'all!

How is everyone this week? So good I hope :) Things here in Bontia Park are bonita for sure. Hermana Romney and I have been keeping up with our bucket list, and we talked to 192 people this week! And we found the cutest two moms that really wanted to learn more, so I'm super excited about that.

Not a super ton happened this week though honestly. Tony is just a serious rock star and he's doing so well. This week we're going to a family history library with him and I'm so pumped :) Other than that though everyone in the branch is super sad Hermana Romney is leaving bc she's the one that actually knows Spanish hahah but it's all good.

Oh but we did have the idea to make a little gratitude tree this weekend, and we went to downtown Brea and just asked people to add little leaves for things they're grateful for. It was so cute and so fun, and it reminded me a lot of my sweet Grammy bc she always has her little gratitude tree for Thanksgiving :) I was honestly kind of surprised though at how some people were kind of stumped about what they were thankful for. But I guess there really are just so many things it's hard to pick just one!

One thing that I'm SUPER grateful for, which I'm sure you all know by now, is the Book of Mormon! I was reading in it the other day, and there is a scripture in Moroni that tells us that everyone has the "Spirit of Christ" in them. Everyone can know right from wrong and everyone can feel the goodness of Jesus Christ and our loving Heavenly Father! This "Spirit of Christ" is what invites us all to do good and to serve those around us, and it's just starting to be the season where I think everyone feels that a little more strongly. There's also a promise in the Book of Mormon in Mosiah 4 that we will have happier lives as we serve others and forget about ourselves! There's a quote that I absolutely love that's from Thomas S Monson, and it says that we don't find happy lives, we make them, and I know that by serving and truly loving those around us, reading the Book of Mormon and the Bible, and being grateful to God in all things, we can make our lives so happy!

I'm so grateful for all of y'all and for the happiness that each of you bring me! I would love to hear what y'all are grateful for too, so let me know!!

Con Amor,
Hermana Brayton :)
